The Mechanism

Broadband chaos fills a toroidal cavity. Standing waves form. Their nodal surfaces — where amplitude = 0 — define where bulk is carved away.

The second harmonic sin(2πx/L) has a node at x = L/2 (the center). Where 2 or more nodal planes intersect, bulk is permanently removed.
